High Definition Multimedia Interface - HDMI


Hari ni aku nak cerita sikit pasal High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI). Apa benda HDMI ni? Kalau nak tahu, HDMI ni satu antaramuka (interface) atau penyambung yang banyak diguna di tv baru (LCD,LED atau plasma). Kalau tv lama yang kotak besar tu, susah la nak jumpa port HDMI ni sebab benda ni adalah dalam format digital. Macam gambar kat bawah ni.

Kalau korang nak tahu, pengasas kepada HDMI ni ialah Hitachi, Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic/National/Quasar), Philips, Silicon Image, Sony, Thomson (RCA) dan Toshiba. Pembangunan teknologi HDMI ni bermula pada tahun 2002 lagi. Tujuannya adalah untuk menghasilkan penyambung AV (AV connector) yang compatible dengan antaramuka DVI (Digital Video Interface). Dulu mula-mulanya tv yang canggih-canggih ni atau dikenali sebagai High Definition TV (HDTV) pakai format DVI-HDCP dan DVI-HDTV. HDMI ni dicipta untuk meningkatkan keupayaan yang ada pada DVI-HDTV dengan penyambung (connector) yang lebih kecil dan berkeupayaan lebih tinggi. Pada tahun 2004, HDMI telah mula dijual dan digunakan dengan meluas di seluruh dunia dan mendapat sambutan yang sangat menggalakkan sehingga PC Magazine telah menganugerahkan HDMI anugerah “Technical Excellence Award” dalam kategori Home Theater. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a compact audio/video interface for transmitting uncompressed digital data. It represents a digital alternative to consumer analog standards, such as radio frequency (RF) coaxial cable, composite video, S-Video, SCART, component video, D-Terminal, or VGA. HDMI connects digital audio/video sources—such as set-top boxes, upconvert DVD players, HD DVD players, Blu-ray Disc players, AVCHD camcorders, personal computers (PCs), video game consoles such as the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and AV receivers—to compatible digital audio devices, computer monitors, and digital televisions.


HDMI has quickly become the standard for connecting consumer electronic devices together and was pioneered by a group of companies including Sony, Philips, Hitachi and Matsushita. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video as well as multi-channel digital audio on a single industry standard cable. HDMI is capable of carrying any type of compressed audio data such as Dolby or DTS. HDMI can transmit all HDTV standards and supports 8 channel digital audio and up to 5Gbps (Giga bits per second ) bandwidth.


What video types does HDMI support?

The HDMI standard can support exisiting high definition video formats of 720p, 1080i and 1080p.
It also has the potential to support enhanced definition formats such as 480p as well as the more common formats such as PAL and NTSC.


What video formats are supported?

720p is the resolution of 1280x720 pixels. The p stands for progressive format.

1080i is the resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The i stands for interlaced format.

1080p is the resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.

480p is the resolution of 640x480 pixels with an aspect ratio of 4:3.


What cables does HDMI support?

A standard Type-A HDMI connector has 19 pins. A Type-B definition also exists which has 29 pins and is targeted at carrying expanded digital signals for video resolutions greater than 1080p.


Is HDMI backwardly compatible with DVI?

Importantly the Type A HDMI connector is backwardly compatible with the existing DVI video input that is used on most modern PC video cards.
